An ending before my very eyes

We stood exchanging news and pleasantries

An odd emptiness revealed her guise

As though we would chat again whenever we please

An ending of tremendous shock

As I search her face for my longtime friend

Whom for eighteen years on the clock

I’d supported and cared for without end

An ending when lack of touch revealed

The truth of unreturned mail and calls

In that moment fate became sealed

From each other’s lives dismissal falls

An ending perhaps now long overdue

As our lives diverged many years ago

Simply setting aside all we’ve been through

No longer my dear friend glad to know

An ending that brings to a sudden close

Years of secrets kept so deeply between

An ending that only one of us really chose

Never again closeness for us to be seen.

The end.
