Words as Weather

Image

Words, like weather, have such power

building up or tearing down at will

as rain can grow or break the flower

criticism empties what praise can fill.

Words, like weather, can lift or lay low

building up or tearing down with ease

as frost destroys bulbs begun to grow

cold words can shatter urge to please.

Words, as weather, can burn or heal

building up or tearing down as flame

as forge aflame lends hardness to steel

words like lightning can splinter and maim.

Words, like weather, give power or take away

building up or tearing down as though wind

empowering gull to glide on updraft all day

or using domination to keep down and gift rescind.

Words, like weather, have power plain to see

building up or tearing down deep wound left

as rot and insect carve out root of fragile tree

so too words can carve and rot leaving soul bereft.
