The Winning

Image

the point waits to be won

ball served, lobbed at the net – with force

flying full of backspin yet seems so simple

yet the return of the serve begins the battle

the point waits to be won

ball returned, with forceful blow – arcing

flying full force its target nervous but ready

so easy to swing away when finesse was needed

the point waits to be won

a ready opponents backhand – launched

flying wildly long almost crossing the line

bending the ball as one bends the truth to suit

the point waits to be won

volley of shots to and fro – unceasing

flying short or long hit over hard at times

finally a winner emerges self-righteous in victory

The point has now been won

match ended winner clear – unfortunately

flying so high one forgets there is also a loser

spirit broken, head down, wondering why they played

The point has now been won

one’s need to be right – destructive

for the battle won often just prolongs the war

was the win worth crushing ones partner in the game?

Far better a tie and handshake at the net.
